In the Germanic literature the dragon is well documented from the 8th century until the modern age, especially in the heroic poetry, also in the old Norse scales. The Old-English epic Beowulf mentions creeping or flying kites, some of which act as guardians of treasures. In ancient Scandinavian sources, they protect against hostile spirits.
